Guess what time it is? Time for an all-new comparison review of meal kit companies. In this review, we’ll be looking closely at Hello Fresh and Plated, which are both long-standing and well known meal kit services. New York-based Plated is a company focused on helping customers create great dishes for their dining table, and Hello Fresh is a German company that has been operating in the US for quite some time.
Who will come out on top in the comparison battle? Read on to find out everything you need about Hello Fresh vs Plated, and to help you choose the best meal kit delivery service for you and your dining requirements.
Hello Fresh and Plated begin the battle on equal footing, offering three plans each.
The 3 plans offered by Plated are:
- 2-people plan with 2, 3 or 4 recipes each week
- 3-people plan with 2, 3 or 4 recipes each week
- 4-people plan with 2, 3 or 4 recipes each week
The 3 plans offered by Hello Fresh are:
- Classic Plan: 15 dishes each week for 2 or 4 people.
- Family Plan: 6 dishes each week for 4 people
- Veggie Plan: 3 dishes each week for 2 or 4 people
Plated is the clear winner in terms of the variety of dishes available. There are 20 dishes to choose from each week. Another bonus is that you can choose any dish from the list each week, no matter which plan you are subscribed to.
Hello Fresh comes in second here with 16 recipes available each week, however they are divided across the three plans on offer. The Classic Plan has 8 recipes, there are 5 in the Family Plan, and the Veggie Plan has 3 recipes.
Take note, there is the option to switch to a different plan any week you want, and you can do this easily.15
How tasty are they?
We’ve sampled a wide range of dishes from Hello Fresh and Plated, so we are in a good position to make a judgement call. And it has to be said – every dish, from both these companies, was delicious! With both Hello Fresh and Plated, it is really easy to broaden your cooking horizons and widen your repertoire in the kitchen.
However, it does seem that Plated’s dishes are a little bit more sophisticated, using a wider range of flavors and cooking methods. If you’re a bit of a foodie, or a more experienced cook, then Plated is a nice option. If you are not though, you will still be fine with Plated, as the range of 20 dishes each week includes many simpler and less challenging recipes.
On the other hand, Hello Fresh’s menu is more on the classic side, with well-loved traditional recipes. However, the dishes also have an interesting twist, which make them a bit more interesting, not to mention the fact that they are all incredibly tasty! All in all, Hello Fresh is slightly better suited to the needs of families.
We are happy to report that Hello Fresh and Plated reliably use ingredients that are really high in quality. Plated claims to use meat that is 100% free of antibiotics, hormone-free beef, and fish and seafood that is sourced sustainably in every possible instance.
On the other hand, Hello Fresh claims to use domestically sourced, all-natural meats, and hormone-free, antibiotic-free poultry. In addition, they use pork certified as having been raised humanely, and seafood that is sourced sustainably. Vegetables used by Hello Fresh are not necessarily organic, however they are always fantastic quality. As the company likes to say, they are more focused on helping customers include more vegetables and fruits in their diets on a day-to-day basis, rather than whether or not the product is organic.
What about the packaging?
Hello Fresh and Plated use high quality, well designed boxes that clearly display the company logo. Both companies sort and pack their deliveries very well. The contents for each dish are individually bagged and labeled with the name of the recipe, so it will be much easier for you to unpack the delivery, and you won’t need to sort it – it’s all been done for you.
Lastly, both Hello Fresh and Plated place the refrigerated items at the base of the box with a generous serving of ice, so the delivery can wait for a few hours outside of the refrigerator without you needing to worry.
How about the app and website?
Top marks go to both companies for their app and website. The sites are easy to use and well laid out. Everything you need to do to manage your account can be done online, including registering your account, choosing your meal preferences, adjusting or selecting your plan, and updating your payment method. The sites also display your past orders and future meal plans, including the recipe, pictures of the finished dish and extra information, such as nutritional data.
Both companies operate on a subscription basis only, however you can freeze your account for a week here or there if you need to. There is some flexibility in choosing your best delivery day. And, if you decide to cancel your subscription, you can do so online with both Hello Fresh and Plated.
What add ons do they offer?
Plated has one add on, but it’s a sweet one!
- Two desserts each week (recipes change every week), for $8 each
Hello Fresh has two add on options:
- Range of kitchenware, such as cookware, knives, storage boxes and more
- Wine subscription, includes 6 bottles of wine per month, for $89/month. You can choose from a red, white or mixed wine plan.
Hello Fresh and Plated are two of our favorite, top ranking meal kit services, and both help you to enhance your dinner menus! They each cater to different audiences: Hello Fresh is a great family option, with classic dishes (with a nice twist!), and easy to prepare recipes; whereas Plated is more suited to cooking aficionados, who are looking to be challenged in the kitchen.
This comparison was certainly a tough call – but Hello Fresh stands just that little bit higher.
